L’utilisation des estampes dans les coffres au milieu du XVIe siècle à Rouen

Abstract : The presence of prints inside the lids of coffers is a well-attested practice in Paris at the turn of the sixteenth century. But whilst many examples of such coffers are still extant, our understanding largely depended on their stylistic analysis and material examination. While this has shown the influence of artists such as Jean d’Ypres, an archival document reveals the context in which the prints were produced and integrated. It shows how three coffer-makers used the same print which must have been systematically inserted into their coffers as well as the economic implications of their printing. This contract suggests the ubiquity of these objects and that such prints were commonplace in mid-sixteenth century Rouen.
